1 Where we are
Wei Jie was promoted three weeks before National Day week. On Saturday he closed alone. Six hundred cups since seven. Milk dried stiff on his sleeve. He was not sad, and not tempted the way he had been taught to name it. He was empty. Bus 133 home passes the block where he used to buy. That night he looked up at it.
2 What the passage is doing
Elijah had just won. Fire on Carmel — then a queen's threat sent him a day into the wilderness, where he sat under a broom tree and asked to die. He slept until an angel woke him, fed him, let him sleep, then woke him again: eat, the journey is too great for you. No rebuke. Bread, water, sleep.
רַב
rab · much, great, more than
Here it is comparative: rab mimmekha, greater than you. The angel measures the road, not the man. He does not say Elijah is weak or faithless; he says the distance is simply more than one body holds. English hears an accusation. Hebrew hears an assessment, and then hands over bread.
3 Taking it with you
Depletion is where the old exits wait — not because you are weak, but because tiredness spends the resolve you had. God does not moralise about that. He feeds it. Jesus slept through a storm and sat down exhausted at a well. He knows the body's limit, and He lends His strength instead of demanding yours. So eat. Sleep. And when someone comes in worn thin, feed them before you advise them.
A prayer you can pray
Father, I am tired, and I know where tired takes me. I am not asking to be stronger on my own. Feed me. Give me sleep. Walk the next stretch of road with me, because it is longer than I am. Amen.
