1 Where we are
Lina is twenty-nine and works in the admin office behind a hotel's kitchens. At three o'clock she takes her break on the loading bay steps and types the whole of last night into an app on her phone — the fight, the shame, and the plan she has not told anyone. Four warm paragraphs come back. It agrees with her. It asks her nothing. She locks the screen and feels lighter for about eleven minutes. She wants to be understood without being looked at. If a real person heard all of it, she thinks she would watch their face change, and she has few people left to lose.
2 What the passage is doing
Psalm 139 is a man talking to God about being seen. David has worked out that there is no room he can enter alone: not the far side of the sea, not the dark, not the womb he came from. He could have written that as a complaint, and in places it nearly is. Instead, in verse four, he notices something quieter — God has the sentence before the tongue does. And the psalm ends not with him hiding, but asking to be searched.

yadaʿta · you know
Yadaʿ is not the knowing of a file or a search result. It is the word used for a shepherd knowing his flock, and for the closeness between a husband and wife. It means knowledge that comes from being involved with someone, not from collecting facts about them. So when David says God knows his word before he speaks it, he is not describing surveillance. He is describing attention from someone already committed to him.
3 Taking it with you
You are not weak for choosing the thing that never sighs at you. An answer that costs nothing is easier than being known by someone whose face might change. But hear the psalm: God had your words before you found them, all of them, including the one you have not typed anywhere. He did not learn them and go quiet. In Jesus he came close enough to be spat at, and went to a cross for people whose insides he already knew completely. The person you are afraid to tell is not a test to pass today. You are already known, and you were not turned away.
A prayer you can pray
Lord, you had my words before I found them, and you did not walk off. I have been saying things to a screen because a screen cannot be disappointed in me. You know all of it already. Thank you that you stayed. When I am ready, put one safe person in front of me, and give me the nerve to speak.
