1 Where we are
At ten past six Jun Heng pulls the shop grille down, and a boy he knew from the same block is waiting at the end of the row. They walk twenty metres. The offer takes one sentence: money comes into your account, you keep four hundred, you send the rest on. No drugs. No fighting. Just a bank app and a number he already has. He is twenty, and four months into the job. What makes him slow down is not the money. It is that the boy asking is not a stranger, and saying no out loud will cost him somebody who knew him before any of this.
2 What the passage is doing
Jesus says this immediately after Peter has tried to talk him out of the cross. Peter is not an enemy; he is the closest friend in the room, and he offers the version of the future where nothing has to be paid. Jesus refuses it hard, then turns to the whole crowd and puts it as a sum: what would it profit you to gain the entire world and forfeit yourself. The shortcut had come from someone who loved him.
ζημιωθῆναι
zēmiōthēnai · to be fined, to forfeit, to take the loss
The word is a trader's word. It is what you write in the ledger when goods are lost at sea, and what a court does to you in a fine. Jesus uses it deliberately: he is not moralising at the crowd, he is doing their arithmetic with them. Put the whole world in one column and the man himself in the other, and ask which side the loss falls on.
3 Taking it with you
So do the sum before you answer, and do it honestly. Four hundred dollars, and an account with your name on it, and a version of yourself that has to be managed from now on. That is the cost side, and it does not stay four hundred. But notice that Christ did not refuse the shortcut because he was strong enough to go without. He refused it because he had already decided to pay for you himself, in full, where everyone could see it. You are not being asked to earn a clean name tonight. You are being asked not to sell one that has already been bought.
A prayer you can pray
Lord Jesus, you were offered a way round the cost by someone who loved you, and you said no. I am not strong like that. But the name I carry was bought by you and not earned by me, so give me the nerve to keep it clean tonight — even when the person asking is a friend, and even if I lose him. Amen.
