You will surely wear away, both you, and this people that is with you; for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to perform it yourself alone.
Exodus 18:18 (WEB)
in its setting: Exodus 18:13-23
1 Where we are
Serene is thirty-nine and runs intake at the academy. At twenty to midnight on Thursday she is driving home on the PIE, two hours after a call with a trainee's mother and twenty minutes with the trainee himself. Fifty-one people have her number. Nobody has asked her a question about herself since Sunday. Somewhere before the Toa Payoh exit she starts crying, and by the time she reverses into her lot she has fixed her face. What frightens her is not the hours. It is the thought that if she ever stops being the one who picks up, she will find she was only ever wanted for picking up.
2 What the passage is doing
Moses has brought a whole nation out of Egypt and is now sitting from morning to evening as the only person in the camp who settles a dispute. His father-in-law Jethro comes to visit, watches one full day of it, and says plainly that what he is seeing is not good. The people are not wrong and Moses is not lazy; the arrangement is wrong. The load will wear out the man and the queue both. Then Jethro tells him to share it out.
כָּבֵד
kaved · heavy, weighty
Kaved is the plain word for physical weight — a loaded cart, a full sack. Jethro does not say the work is wrong or that Moses is weak; he says the thing has mass, and one man cannot lift it. The same three letters stand behind kavod, the weight of God's glory. Scripture takes weight seriously. If what you are carrying feels heavy, that is not a character flaw. It is a measurement.
3 Taking it with you
If you are the one everybody calls, hear what God says through an old man in a desert camp: the weight was never meant to sit on one pair of shoulders, and saying so is not failure. Notice what he does not say. He does not tell Moses to try harder or pray harder. He gives him men to share it. And Jesus, who carried the one weight that could not be shared, carried it for you — and even he asked three friends to stay awake with him and said that his soul was crushed. You do not have to be indispensable to be loved. You already are.
A prayer you can pray
Lord, you know what today already asks of me, and you know I am tired in a way I do not say out loud. I am not able to carry this alone, and I am learning that you never asked me to. Send me people. Teach me to say the true thing when someone asks how I am. And hold me tonight, not because I am useful, but because I am yours.
Soli Deo Gloria — to God alone be the glory.
