1 Where we are
Nadhirah is twenty-seven and eight weeks in. At twenty to seven on Monday the manager meets her at the service lift, already on leave from that afternoon, and hands over the keys, the float bag and the printed roster for the week. She says something about chasing the milk order, and then she is gone. Nadhirah gets the grille halfway up and stops there, totalling in her head everything that could go wrong by Friday, and who would be told first. Underneath the sum is something simpler. Eight weeks of people thinking well of her, and she believes she is holding all of it up herself, and one bad week takes it back.
2 What the passage is doing
Moses is eighty and has been minding another man's sheep for forty years, ever since he killed a man in Egypt and ran. Now a bush burns without burning up, and God says: go to Pharaoh, bring my people out. Moses answers with the only honest thing he has — who am I, that I should go? God does not list his qualifications, does not mention his palace education or his nerve. He says only: certainly I will be with you.
אֶהְיֶה
'ehyeh · I will be
Moses asks who he is; God answers with a verb about himself, not an adjective about Moses. 'Ehyeh is the same word God uses two verses later when he gives his own name — I will be who I will be. So the promise to a frightened man is not "you are more capable than you think" but "the one who simply is, is coming with you." English hears reassurance. Hebrew hears God putting his own name behind the assignment.
3 Taking it with you
You may be the one who hands out the keys, or the one standing at a half-open grille with them in your hand. Either way, notice what God did not do at that bush. He did not talk anyone up. He put himself in the room and let that be enough. And when you ask whether you are the person for this, the ground you stand on is not this week's takings or your clean record so far. Christ came for people who could not hold their own life up, and he holds it instead. So the keys are not a test you can fail your way out of God's hands. Open up. He is already there before you.
A prayer you can pray
Father, I am holding something I do not feel equal to. I keep thinking I must earn the trust I have been given, all over again, every day. Thank you that Jesus has already settled where I stand with you. Be with me this morning, the way you promised Moses. And make me someone who is steady beside the people working next to me today. Amen.
