Dragged Out, Not Coached

What a wretched man I am! Who will deliver me out of the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ, our Lord! So then with the mind, I myself serve God’s law, but with the flesh, the sin’s law.

Romans 7:24-25 (WEB)

in its setting: Romans 7:15-25

1 Where we are

Devan is twenty-two and four months in. On Wednesday at four he named all three of his triggers out loud in group, correctly, in the order he was taught. At eleven that night he stood across the road from his old supplier's block for twenty minutes, doing nothing at all, and then he walked home. On Thursday morning his keyworker asks how the week went, and he studies the table. He cannot decide whether that is a win or a confession. Underneath sits the thing he will not say: if knowing it did not keep his feet at home, maybe he is not worth the seat they gave him.

2 What the passage is doing

Paul is writing to a church in Rome that has never met him, and halfway through the letter he stops describing other people. He switches to the present tense and says the unbearable thing out loud: he agrees with what is good, he wants it, and something else in him is already moving. He does not fix this with effort or a sharper method. He asks a question instead — who will rescue me — and answers it with a name rather than a technique.

A word in the Koine Greek

ῥύσεται

rhysetai · will drag out, will snatch to safety

The verb behind "rescue" is not repair and not coaching. It pictures someone reaching in and hauling a person bodily out of danger, the way you pull a man off a road. Paul does not ask what he should try next; he asks who will come. And the tense is future, which means the answer was still ahead of him even after all he knew.

3 Taking it with you

You are on the other side of that table, and if you are honest you know that same divided self from the inside. So do not require of him a cleaner week than the one Paul admitted to in writing. What rescued Paul was not a firmer grip; it was Christ arriving, dying for the man who stood across the road and for the man who crossed it, before either had a good month to show for himself. That is the ground you stand on, and it is not your streak. When Devan tells you about the twenty minutes, take it without flinching and without grading it. Standing still and walking home was real, and you saw it.

A prayer you can pray

Father, you know the distance between what I understand and what I actually did this week. I am not going to dress it up. Thank you that Jesus came for me while that gap was still open, and did not wait for a better version of me. Hold me today. And make me safe for the person who is about to tell me the truth. Amen.

Soli Deo Gloria — to God alone be the glory.
